At-Home Buzz Cut Checklist

A calm sequence for a first self-cut. The goal is even, reversible, and boring in the best way.

Before cutting

  • Hair is clean, dry, and combed in its normal direction.
  • Clipper is charged or plugged in.
  • Chosen guard clicks firmly onto the blade.
  • Mirror setup lets both shoulders stay relaxed.
  • Room has bright light from more than one angle.

First pass

  1. Start with a longer guard than your final target.
  2. Cut a hidden test strip before the full head.
  3. Use slow overlapping passes with the guard flat.
  4. Keep the same guard until the entire head is checked.
  5. Brush loose hair away before judging the result.

Back of head

  • Center nape upward.
  • Left back panel upward.
  • Right back panel upward.
  • Behind each ear.
  • Crown from multiple directions.

Review and cleanup

  • Feel for ridges with your palm.
  • Check crown, temples, and behind ears.
  • Wait 10 minutes before stepping shorter.
  • Brush hair out of the clipper.
  • Oil blades if the clipper manual calls for it.
